Process for registering for BIOE 195 with a non-BIOE faculty instructor of record

  1. A total of 4 units of BIOE 195: Upper Division Undergraduate Research can count as a technical elective in the BIOE major. The course must be taken for a letter grade. If you are taking BIOE 195 with a faculty member in the BIOE department, no additional approval is required. However, you should have a research and grading plan that addresses the BIOE PLOs 6 and 7 below.
  2. If you are planning on performing research for academic credit with faculty outside of the BIOE department, you must receive permission from the Department before you sign up for research credits intended to be counted as a BIOE technical elective. Only BIOE 195 is approved as a technical elective and the department must provide approval for non-BIOE faculty to serve as the instructor of record for BIOE 195.
    1. Do not sign-up for 195 with the faculty department!
  3. Discuss with your faculty advisor and provide a brief one-page research and grading plan that addresses the BIOE PLOs 6 and 7 below. The plan must be signed by the instructor of record (faculty advisor).
  4. Submit the BIOE 195 research and grading plan when you register for classes for the upcoming semester.  To allow sufficient time for processing, the last date to submit this request is the first day of instruction.
  5. The plan will be submitted to Karla Gonzalez through soeadvising@ucmerced.edu who will forward it to the Department for approval. Approved plans will allow the student to sign up for BIOE 195 with their non-BIOE instructor of record (faculty advisor) of choice. If the research and grading plan is not approved because it does not satisfy the BIOE PLOs, you may sign up for academic research credit under XXX 195 with the XXX being the department code of the proposed non-BIOE instructor of record (faculty advisor). Research courses other than BIOE 195 will not count as a BIOE technical elective. However, they will count for unit requirements for graduation. Please note that petitions for program variance (PPV) requesting to count  XXX 195: Upper Division Undergraduate Research courses without the BIOE 195 course designation as a technical elective will not be approved.
